Box vs Field Lacrosse Sticks: Length, Head and Rule Checks

Compare box and men's field lacrosse runner sticks by rule-set length, head width and pocket checks before reusing or buying a stick.

Quick answer

Box and men's field runner sticks share some dimensions, but the rulebooks do not match in every detail. World Lacrosse's 2026–28 box rules set runner sticks at 40–42 inches and heads at 4.5–7 inches wide; its 2025–27 men's field rules also use 40–42 inches for a short stick but set head width at 6–10 inches. Check the governing body's current rules and the player's role before using or buying a cross-format stick.

Box and men’s field lacrosse use different rulebooks, so compare the exact format before reusing a stick. Some measurements overlap, but that does not prove a head, pocket or assembled stick will pass the local inspection.

Compare the rule-set dimensions

Rule reference Runner stick requirements in the cited document
World Lacrosse box, 2026–28 Overall length: 40–42 inches. Head width: 4.5–7 inches, inside measurement. Pocket depth: no more than 5 inches, measured from the top outside edge of the sidewalls.
World Lacrosse men’s field, 2025–27 Short stick: 40–42 inches; long stick: 52–72 inches. Field head width: 6–10 inches, inside measurement.
USA Lacrosse box rulebook, 2023 Runner stick: 40–42 inches. Head width: 4.5–8 inches, inside measurement. The listed pocket-depth limit is 5 inches.

The documents above are from different rule cycles and governing bodies. In particular, the USA Lacrosse box rulebook cited here is labeled 2023, while the World Lacrosse box rules cover 2026–28. Use the rulebook named by the player’s league or event and check for newer local updates before buying.

Choose by format and position

For field play, first decide whether the player needs a short stick or a long pole. For box, check the runner-stick range for the relevant rulebook; the World Lacrosse box rules specify 40–42 inches. Goalkeepers use separate dimensions, so do not apply runner-stick measurements to a goalie stick.

Then confirm the head’s width, the pocket setup and any required ball-release or construction checks in the same rulebook. A field head that falls within both a field and box width range may still fail another inspection requirement. If you already own a head or shaft, measure the complete setup and check that the parts are securely compatible before using it in a different format.

When comparing products, read the page for the exact head and shaft combination. The men’s head guide explains field head priorities, while stick length by position covers field and goalie lengths. If you are choosing a new setup, compare complete sticks with building from parts and use the stringing guide for the assembly process.

Common questions

Can I use a field lacrosse stick for box lacrosse?

Do not assume it is legal because the overall length overlaps. Head width, pocket checks and other details depend on the rulebook used by the event; confirm the exact stick against that rule set.

How long is a box lacrosse runner stick?

World Lacrosse's 2026–28 box rules set the runner stick at 40 to 42 inches. The goalkeeper has a separate stick rule, and local or domestic leagues may use a different rulebook.

Can I use a field long pole in box lacrosse?

World Lacrosse's 2026–28 box rules set runner sticks at 40 to 42 inches, so a 52- to 72-inch field long pole does not fit that runner-stick range. Check your local competition's rulebook.

Are USA box lacrosse stick rules the same as World Lacrosse rules?

The published documents differ. The 2023 USA Lacrosse box rulebook allows runner-head widths of 4.5 to 8 inches, while World Lacrosse's 2026–28 box rules set 4.5 to 7 inches. Check the current rules used by your league.
